Kings College 6th Form Common Room

Kings College

Kings College in Taunton employed Mitchell Eley Gould to undertake the design of a new 6th Form common room for their existing boarding house at Bishop Fox. The client were specific, asking for a robust design that would withstand the ‘day to day’ enthusiasm and active nature of pupils occupying a male boarding house. The architect has taken time and care to design a robust structure that provides the existing house with a new, distinctive identity. The rich, dark, castellated, timber exterior pushes itself out of the surrounding existing building line and creates a new focal point in the centre of the courtyard. The articulated building form with its cutaway corner creates a dynamic and playful addition to the range of existing buildings and the robust detailing means that the school have little to worry about when it comes to building damage and ongoing maintenance costs. This beautifully crafted, suburban timber fort has provided the school with a space which enables its pupils to relax and enjoy there limited free communal time in a naturally ventilated, day-lit, inspiring space.
