Scala

Bath, Somerset

The Scala is an iconic building at the heart of Bath’s Oldfield Park area. It is a unique example of early 20th century neo-Georgian architecture and originally opened as a cinema after the first world war. It has been used as a co-operative store since 1962, but is in dire need of regeneration. The proposed development takes a high-density and mixed-use approach; providing a variety of purpose-built student housing, key worker studio flats, affordable homes, a local anchor store and space for a community dance studio. The proposal demonstrates how an agenda of density and public green space can enable the sustainable development of a challenging site, as well as supporting the revitalisation of a local heritage asset.
